KUCHING – The high court here has declared Datuk Sng Chee Hua bankrupt on March 24, according to a March 26 notice.
Chee Hua, father to Julau MP Larry Sng, filed for bankruptcy on January 18. The elder Sng was a former Julau lawmaker and Pelagus assemblyman.
He also won the party polls to become Sarikei PKR chief in November 2018. The Sng family is known for its political dynasty as Chee Hua’s father, Sng Joo, was the Kapitan China in Kapit.
They came into the limelight again when Sarawak PKR chief Larry left the party in late February to become a government-friendly MP.
Larry had said Pakatan Harapan’s (PH) constant whining about unequal allocation for opposition MPs could have been avoided had it implemented the necessary reforms while in power.
He stopped short of admitting that the lack of funds is being used by the Perikatan Nasional government to hold his constituency – among the poorest in the country – hostage.
Speaking to The Vibes, Sng had said when he was on the opposition bench, there had been a shortage of funds to address his constituents’ basic needs, prompting his move across the aisle.
“Now that I am aligned with the government, expectations have changed and people expect me to deliver on my promises.”
When Larry defected, he was joined by Tebrau MP Steven Choong, and less than a month later, PKR vice-president Datuk Xavier Jayakumar also defected.
On the heels of their departure, PKR president Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim had alleged that five PKR lawmakers had been threatened or enticed with rewards to join the PN government.
PH also accused the government of using enforcement agencies as “political weapons” to intimidate and pressure MPs into declaring support for the prime minister.
“The PH presidential council has been informed of actions by agencies, including the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC), Inland Revenue Board (IRB) and police, towards opposition lawmakers, their officers and families.”
The coalition had said in a statement that it understood this has happened repeatedly to pressure MPs to pledge support to Prime Minister Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin, who has yet to prove his majority support in Parliament.
