MIRI – The Sibu Municipal Council (SMC) has listed dining out as a “high-risk activity” due to the spread of Covid-19 at eateries.
Chairman Clarence Ting said many fresh infections have been detected at these places.
Evidence gathered by health authorities via MySejahtera in Sibu shows that a lot of Covid-19-positive individuals went out to eat at coffee shops and other eateries before (the cases) were detected.
“I want to emphasise today that sitting and eating at these places is a high-risk activity because of the high possibility of infected people present.
“Taking off your mask in these public places is very risky,” he said via WhatsApp today.
It is best to order takeaways and eat at home, he said, adding that he has seen many patrons not wearing masks while chatting after having their meal.
“Think of the safety of your own self, your family and your colleagues when you want to eat out.”
On Saturday, SMC ordered the Sibu Central Market shut after a Covid-19 outbreak among the traders there.
Besides fresh produce, the market also has stalls selling food.
Ting said the closure order, tentatively in effect until Friday, was issued after more traders were found positive for the coronavirus.
Sibu town will also see more stringent movement restrictions, he said.
“The SOPs require that we close all non-essential premises, like karaoke outlets, bars and entertainment outlets. Food outlets can only do takeaways, with dine-in prohibited.”
Night markets, meanwhile, are banned with immediate effect.
Ting said sanitisation works will be conducted at the market and other premises.
The market and other commercial areas in Sibu, Sarawak’s worst-hit district, have seen outbreaks multiple times since last year.
Of the 137 virus deaths and nearly 23,000 infections recorded in the state so far, half were in Sibu.
Meanwhile, the Miri City Council and police have intensified enforcement at the area’s central market, which has both produce and food stalls, to ensure customers comply with the standard operating procedures.
The council has issued numerous compounds to SOP flouters, with the fine amount increased from RM1,000 to RM1,500.
Besides Sibu, the state’s worst-hit urban districts are Miri, Kuching and Bintulu. – The Vibes, April 19, 2021
