MIRI – Sarawak authorities have imposed a curfew on the Bintulu division in the northern part of the state to stop the public from venturing out of their houses between 8pm and 6am.

This strict movement restriction starts tonight and will continue for the next two weeks.

Bintulu division resident Jack Aman Luat announced the measure at his office after meeting police and health officials.

He said the curfew is among the enhanced public movement control measures being introduced to halt the surge of Covid-19 in the division, which covers the three districts of Bintulu, Tatau and Sebauh.

“From 8pm to 6am, anyone venturing into public spaces without any good reason will be issued on-the-spot fines by the police.

“This is effective starting tonight and will last until May 10, at least,” he said.

Essential businesses, such as supermarkets, food outlets, sundry goods and retail shops, can only operate from 6am to 8pm, he said.

Also, supermarkets and department stores are only allowed to have a maximum of 50 shoppers at any one time, while shops can only allow a maximum of 10 customers, he said.

No dine-in is allowed at food outlets, but they can still offer take-aways, he added.

Luat said residents living in Bintulu who want to travel out, and those from outside who want to travel in, must undergo swab tests and show a negative result three days before their travel date.

In the meantime, he said the authorities have traced the 100 people in the Bintulu district who had tested positive for Covid-19 during swab tests but could not be located as they had given false addresses and phone numbers to health teams.

“These people are in the process of being placed in isolation at hospital.

“They are giving themselves up after reports highlighted by Bintulu MP Datuk Seri Tiong King Sing,” he said.

Tiong had on Sunday issued a statement warning the public of the 100 people who were tested from April 12 to 21 and were subsequently found positive for Covid-19, but had later gone missing.
