MIRI – Sarawak today saw two more Covid-19 fatalities and six more new clusters emerging, the state Disaster Management Committee secretariat announced in a press statement.
Along with 522 new infections, the latest deaths bring the death toll to 173 to date in the pandemic-ravaged state.
The deaths involved a 47-year-old woman in Bintulu Hospital as well as a 90-year-old woman in Kapit Hospital. The secretariat extended condolences to the families of the deceased.
The six new clusters detected today are the Taman Pelita cluster in Kuching where six people were found to be positive after a funeral; the Tabuan Melayu in Kuching district, involving five people in a house; the Durin cluster in Bau, involving six workers; the Sileng Dayak cluster in Lundu, involving 72 people in a settlement; and the Sains Bakam cluster in Miri, involving 17 secondary school students. The total number of clusters now in the state stands at 71.
Out of the new infections today, Bintulu district recorded the most cases (140), followed by Sibu (96), Miri (66), Kuching (58), Kanowit (40), Selangau (15) and other districts (below 15 cases each).
The secretariat said Sarawak has imposed an enhanced movement control order on more longhouses in various localities.
The secretariat said all standard operating procedures with regards to wearing facemasks, physical distancing, and personal hygiene must be observed strictly.
It reminded the people of Sarawak of the seriousness of the pandemic in the state, adding that the state cannot afford to be lax anymore lest the situation deteriorates even further. – The Vibes, April 29, 2021
