KUALA LUMPUR – Police will summon all 90 identified marchers involved in the #BukaPuasaBukaParlimen peaceful gathering yesterday to record their statement.

A member of the organisers told The Vibes that as of 7.11pm, they have yet to receive calls or be informed by the police on the matter.

Bukit Aman, in a short media note, said the participants will be investigated under Section 9(5) of the Peaceful Assembly Act 2012 – for allegedly not applying for a police permit for the event.

It added that there were no applications submitted by any party to the Dang Wangi district police headquarters for the rally. So far, no arrests or seizures have been made.

On Twitter, Muar MP and Muda co-founder Syed Saddiq Syed Abdul Rahman denounced the move by authorities, saying: “What’s there to investigate? A waste of PDRM’s time. There are more criminal acts that need attention.”

Yesterday, Sentul police chief Beh Eng Lai told The Vibes that the gathering was an offence.

Referring to the Peaceful Assembly Act 2012, he said the police were not informed of the protest. According to Section 9(5) of the act, the organisers of an assembly must give police a minimum of five days’ notice.

Yesterday, more than 100 people marched on the Parliament building despite heavy police presence to demand the reconvening of lawmakers.

Organised by Sekretariat Solidariti Rakyat – a loose coalition of youth civil groups – the participants marched 500m from Tugu Negara to the gates of Parliament.

“It’s not a protest per se,” a secretariat member told The Vibes yesterday.

Wishing to remain anonymous, the member said the event is merely a “peaceful gathering of Malaysians breaking fast together”. – The Vibes, May 1, 2021
