LANGKAWI – A Langkawi passenger ferry that got gutted by fire yesterday afternoon is being held at the Kuala Kedah ferry terminal to facilitate investigations to establish the cause of the incident.
A Marine Department spokesman said the Starcity Express 6 will be docked at the terminal until the investigating team’s task, which has already begun, is completed.
The incident that occurred at 4pm yesterday when the fire broke out on the ferry shortly after it had left the terminal.
However, the vessel with 305 passengers managed to return to the terminal, with everyone on board alighting from the ferry and moving to safety. No one was hurt during the incident.
The department today said that their investigations confirmed that there was no oil spill spotted in the area.
The ferry was en route to Langkawi carrying passengers to the holiday island. The affected passengers were later transferred to the Myferry 2 passenger ferry which left for the island at 5pm.
Two fire engines from Kuala Kedah arrived and put out the fire in approximately 40 minutes.
The investigation team was set up by the Northern Region Marine Department to establish the cause of the fire. – The Vibes, May 12, 2021
