GEORGE TOWN – Umno should return to its role as a nation builder while addressing issues that resonate with the times, said former division chief Datuk Zaid Ibrahim as he contemplates returning to politics.

He told The Vibes that the country needs a Malay-based party to be its bulwark and spearhead economic growth.

“My view has always been that the nation needs a Malay-based party to be the bulwark, which can also become the engine of progress the country badly needs.

“The early years of Umno’s history were harmonious and peaceful because it was willing to be the leader of all. Umno stood for what it meant to be a progressive uniter of a multiracial country.

“It unfortunately took a turn for the worst. It became a Malay party defending Malay rights as if the Malays were under siege. It became a religious party as if religion was under siege. Neither premise was correct. They were just convenient political tools.”

Umno celebrated its 75th anniversary yesterday.

“The question is whether Umno is willing to go back to its rightful role; to build this country and to stand for good governance and all the issues that resonate with modern times.”

Meanwhile, Zaid, having quit PKR and DAP in recent times, said he prefers a return of politics that is progressive and facts-based instead of focusing on polemic issues of race or religion. – The Vibes, May 12, 2021
