A BRITISH academic and economist who has lived in Malaysia for more than 20 years is locked in a desperate, last-ditch human rights battle, fighting for judicial permission to leave Malaysia to attend his father’s funeral in Liverpool in the United Kingdom.

Professor Dr Geoffrey Alan Williams, a prominent, independent economist and policy analyst, has spent three decades in higher education across the UK and Malaysia.

Today, he finds himself trapped in a Kafkaesque legal maze, allegedly engineered by the opposing counsel in a legal matter he is involved in, to block his movement and strip him of his basic human dignity during an acute family tragedy.

According to Dr Williams, he was forced to watch helplessly from afar as his father entered his final end-of-life care in the UK. Despite making four separate, desperate emotional and legal pleas to the Shah Alam High Court for permission to travel to his father’s bedside, his requests were refused.

His father passed away on October 4, 2026, without his son by his side, and now Dr Williams is hoping to at least be allowed to attend his father’s funeral.

Dr Williams has taken decisive legal countermeasures and has formally lodged police reports under Sections 503 and 506 of the Penal Code for criminal intimidation, Section 507B for harassment, and Section 233 of the Communications and Multimedia Act 1998.

Crucially, formal complaints and reports have also been filed with the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) and the Advocates and Solicitors Disciplinary Board (ASDB) over the alleged systemic abuse of process.

With time running out before his mandatory departure for the UK, Dr Williams has escalated his plight to the highest echelons of the Malaysian judiciary.

He has submitted urgent administrative appeals on compassionate grounds directly to the Chief Justice, pleading for an administrative stay, file consolidation and urgent intervention.

A definitive ruling and crucial judicial directions will be handed down tomorrow, determining whether basic compassion, natural justice, and the rule of law will prevail. - October 20, 2026
