PRIME Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim today attended the funeral of his elder brother, Idrus Ibrahim, who was laid to rest at the Cherok Tokun Bawah Muslim Cemetery after Friday prayers.
Anwar joined hundreds of mourners for the funeral prayer at the temporary hall of Masjid Cherok Tokun Bawah, which was led by Penang Mufti Prof Madya Datuk Dr Mohd Sukki Othman.
He later walked behind the bier as Idrus’ remains were taken from the mosque to the cemetery, about 50 metres from the family home, at around 2.10 pm.
The burial was witnessed by family members, relatives, community leaders and residents from the area.
The talkin was recited by Imam 1 of Masjid Jamek Cherok Tokun Bawah, Ustaz Tengku Zahari Tengku Baharom.
Speaking to reporters after the burial, Anwar thanked those who had helped with the funeral arrangements and those who came to pay their last respects.
“Thank you to everyone who helped. Thank you to the people of Cherok Tokun and friends who came. Thank you very much,” he said.
Earlier, Anwar had walked from the family home in Jalan Kilang Ubi to accompany the remains as they were taken by van to the temporary mosque hall at about 12.20 pm.
Idrus, 83, was the second of eight siblings and a former headmaster of Sekolah Kebangsaan Stowell.
He died in his sleep at about 6.10 pm yesterday, reportedly due to old age.
Born on Nov 25, 1943, Idrus leaves behind his wife, Faridah Hanim Mohd Ghouse, 80, four children and 10 grandchildren. – September 25, 2026
