MIRI – The people of Sarawak who are currently living outside of the state have been asked not to return for the time being.

State Local Government and Housing Minister Datuk Seri Dr Sim Kui Hian said he is making the appeal in light of the surge in Covid-19 cases in this state, as well as in Peninsular Malaysia.

Speaking on social media, he said state authorities are concerned about an increase in imported cases coming into Sarawak.

“The state is already overloaded with local infections so please don’t come back as yet, Sarawakians who are outside Sarawak.

“We appeal for your understanding. We are worried as our hospital’s ICUs are already dealing with so many cases daily. We cannot take extra loads from imported infections.

“Yesterday, we had the youngest death (aged 29) from Covid-19 and we are sad and worried about our local infections too.

“So Sarawakians who are outside the state now, please do not fly back as yet,” he said.

Dr Sim, who is advisor to the state Disaster Management Committee, said it is safer for all to stay home and avoid travelling until the Covid-19 situation is contained.

Yesterday, a 29-year-old woman became the latest fatality from among five new Covid-19 deaths in Sarawak.

The young woman who suffered from obesity, died at the Bintulu Hospital and the cause of death was confirmed as due to Covid-19.

Yesterday also saw 405 new infections statewide, with Miri district recording the highest with 98 infections.

There are 81 clusters statewide with one new Kg Bangan Cluster in Kuching involving 19 positive infections. – The Vibes, May 17, 2021
