KOTA KINABALU – The district-crossing ban in Sabah has been brought forward and lengthened.

It will start on May 24 and be effective until June 7, following three-figure Covid-19 cases recorded in the state, three days in a row.

Sabah Covid-19 spokesman Datuk Seri Masidi Manjun announced this in a statement today, bringing forward the ban that was previously only scheduled to take place from May 27 until June 3.

“The travel restriction aims to control movement of population and curb the spread of Covid-19 from red and orange-zone-districts to yellow and green-zone-districts,” he said.

He stressed that there could be changes and adjustments from time to time.

During the travel restriction period, residents are not allowed to move between districts, except for residents in Kota Kinabalu, Penampang and Putatan, which are categorised as the same district.

Sabah recorded 160 new Covid-19 cases on May 19, 245 cases yesterday, and 144 new cases today.

Kalabakan saw the highest new infections today with 26 cases, followed by Kota Kinabalu (20) and Tawau (17).

In a related development, Prime Minister Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin has today said that the government will tighten restrictions under the movement control order (MCO).

However, residents in Sabah will be waiting for a decision from the state government if it will apply the same approach here.

Sabah did not adopt the third MCO from May 12 to June 7 that was announced by Muhyiddin on May 10 as a “nationwide MCO”.

Sabah, as well as Sarawak, can take their own measures when it comes to health matters. –The Vibes, May 21, 2021
