MIRI – Food aid has arrived for thousands of native folk reeling from the past week’s floods in northern Sarawak’s interior.
Extensive damage has also been reported in settlements in Baram and Mulu as clean-up operations begin.
Mulu assemblyman Datuk Gerawat Gala said food supplies were flown in via commercial flights and Fire and Rescue Department helicopters.
“The food aid from the welfare authorities have been successfully deployed and distributed to all affected families,” he said in a social media post.
Telang Usan assemblyman Dennis Ngau said the impact of the floods in Baram district is extensive.

“A lot of help will have to be given to those affected by the damage to homes and farms. The ground situation is being assessed,” he said.
In Lawas, village development committees are also helping to coordinate distribution of food items donated by the Welfare Department.
Flood relief shelters have been closed after victims were allowed to return home.
At the height of the floods during the past week, Baram, Marudi, Mulu, Limbang, Lawas, Bario and Ba’kelalan saw non-stop rain and flash floods, with settlements seeing waters up to 3m high.
Longhouses, riverine villages, schools and clinics were also inundated for long periods of time. – The Vibes, May 27, 2021
