KOTA KINABALU – Unduk Ngadau Borderless Kaamatan organising chief has thrown her support behind a contestant who lodged a report alleging sexual harassment.
In a statement, chairman Joanna Kitingan commended the contestant for her bravery in lodging a report and that those found guilty should be severely dealt with.
She also encouraged any contestant facing similar issues to come forward.
“We praise her for her bravery in reporting such a hideous act. We believe that the contestant should get justice and the guilty party should be severely dealt with.
“In the meanwhile, we will give our fullest cooperation if needed by the police in their investigations.”
Kitingan said the organising committee is disappointed over the alleged incident and had done its best to care for the finals’ 21 contestants.
“We even organised an awareness talk on sexual harassment via Zoom. The theme of our Unduk Ngadau Kaamatan this year is to pay a tribute to Suminundu/Huminodun, who was a very strong, empowered woman.
“We have always protected our young contestants who are with their chaperones throughout the six-day pageant period.
“How this incident could have happened was beyond our control.
“We were not aware or informed of the whereabouts of this contestant when this incident allegedly took place. According to the date and time of the reports, it was before the selection of the top 21,” she said.
Meanwhile, the Unduk Ngadau Sabah Association also condemned the alleged incident and are ready to provide support to any other victims.
“We are also proud of the contestant who was brave enough to come forward and report the incident.
“This is always not easy for the victim… but I think all Unduk Ngadau women should come together and support each other in voicing any kind of harassment or crimes against women,” said association chairman Ellyanti P. Nelson.
