KUALA LUMPUR – The Yang di-Pertuan Agong has invited all political party leaders to discuss the end of the emergency and reopening of Parliament in August.

It will also be an indication of whether Prime Minister Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin still commands majority support in the Dewan Rakyat.

It is understood that the Agong is seeking counsel from his brother rulers on whether he should meet all MPs to ascertain if the present leadership and Perikatan Nasional administration still hold the parliamentary majority.

It is believed that the Conference of Rulers is of the opinion that with the increasing number of Covid-19 cases and fatalities, and a healthcare system that is on the brink of collapse, it is evident that the emergency declared on January 12 is ineffective.

The proclamation is expected to expire on August 1.

Several political leaders contacted by The Vibes have confirmed the invitation and are awaiting a date for the audience with the king after the movement control order ends.

Over the past months, many lawmakers – from both sides of the aisle – and civil society groups have urged for Parliament to reconvene.

On January 12, Malaysia logged 3,309 new coronavirus cases. Today, the nation recorded 5,271 infections.

Just last week, the country saw more than 8,000 cases and over 100 deaths in a day. – The Vibes June 7, 2021
