SANDAKAN – A male cleaner is believed to have been electrocuted after a loose wire dropped into a river in Mile 3, where he was fishing.

The 42-year-old deceased, identified as Irwan Nasri, was a cleaner at the Elopura Market in Mile 2 ½.

His body was found by civilians at the river yesterday at around 1pm.

Sandakan Fire and Rescue Department received a distress call at 1.50pm, and firemen took the victim out of the water to a medical team that was present, who pronounced him dead.

Head of Sandakan Fire and Rescue Department, Jimmy Lagung said firemen also inspected the safety of the area before ending the operation at 2.18pm.

“From the situation at the scene, we believe that the victim was electrocuted to death,” he said.

Sandakan District Police Chief, ACP Mohd Azhar Hamin said the case has been classified as sudden death, and there was no criminal element to the case.

“Early investigation found that at about 12.30pm after the victim had finished working at the market, he went to the river in Mile 3 to catch fish and crabs. However, his dead body was discovered by public members at about 1pm.

“The body has been sent to the forensics department of the Duchess of Kent Hospital for further investigation, before the deceased could be returned to his family,” he said. –The Vibes, October 17, 2020.
