KUALA LUMPUR – Lawyer Tan Sri Muhammad Shafee Abdullah’s trial for money laundering, involving RM9.5 million he allegedly received from former prime minister Datuk Seri Najib Razak, and for purportedly making false statements to the Inland Revenue Board, will continue on July 22 at the high court here.

Deputy public prosecutor Afzainizam Abdul Aziz said the hearing, which was supposed to enter its third day today, is postponed due to Phase 1 of the National Recovery Plan.

“The trial before judge Datuk Muhammad Jamil Hussin will continue on July 22,” he told reporters via WhatsApp.

Counsel Harvinderjit Singh, representing Shafee, said the court fixed July 22 and 23, and August 6 for the hearing.

Three witnesses have testified in the proceedings, which began on May 21.

On September 13, 2018, Shafee pleaded not guilty to two counts of receiving RM9.5 million in proceeds of unlawful activities via two cheques issued by Najib that were deposited into his CIMB Bank account.

He was also charged with two counts of engaging in transactions resulting from illegal activities, namely submitting incorrect tax returns, in violation of Paragraph 113(1)(a) of the Income Tax Act 1967 for the financial years ending December 31, 2013 and December 31, 2014.

He also faces two charges over transactions involving proceeds of unlawful activities, namely by submitting incorrect tax returns, in contravention of Paragraph 113(1)(a) of the Income Tax Act for the financial years ending December 31, 2013 and December 31, 2014. – Bernama, July 1, 2021
