KOTA KINABALU – Police in Pulau Gaya have intensified efforts to track down 69 islanders who fled as they were being taken to the quarantine centre here.

The state government is urging the runaways to surrender themselves to avoid infecting others.

The 69 individuals from Kg Pondo fled to escape the enhanced movement control order imposed on the village.

The statement released by the state Local Government and Housing Ministry did not specify when the incident took place.

“They have failed to return to Kg Pondo, and if detained, they will be penalised for flouting the Prevention and Control of Infectious Diseases (Measures Within Infected Local Areas) Regulations 2021 and other laws related to the local government.

“We also call for the public to provide information as to their whereabouts to the police,” said the ministry. – The Vibes, July 6, 2021
