KUALA LUMPUR – Netizens have backed the health director-general after a former aide to International Trade and Industry Minister Datuk Seri Azmin Ali called for his resignation over his handling of the country’s Covid-19 pandemic.

Adlin M. Zabri, who was Azmin’s press secretary until February this year, had earlier mentioned Tan Sri Dr Noor Hisham Abdullah in a remark made on Twitter this afternoon.

His demand was posted in a tweet sharing a Free Malaysia Today article titled “Netizens rebuke DG over his post on CACs in Selangor”.

“DG u obviously fail to do a proper planning n all these blanket lockdowns show that u r incapable of handling,” Adlin said on his Twitter account.

“Stick to surgery or better still Quit.”

Adlin’s tweet saw more than 300 retweets but only 11 likes, as well as dozens of direct responses, most of them opposed to the former press secretary’s call.

However, after receiving backlash, Adlin has since deleted the post and deactivated his social media accounts, which remain inaccessible as of press time.

However, the responses to his tweet remained online.

“Hellooo why is it the DG’s fault?? Why not ask ‘Spanish Fly’ to do his job properly?,” asked Twitter user @YanaMeera.

“Ask @AzminAli to close the factories as well. The SOPs (standard operating procedures) are a mess. (And yet) you have the heart to blame people.”

“If the DG resigns, we will riot!” said user @haziqrifaie_.

Another user, @kny_mie, said it was the ministers who should resign, and not Dr Noor Hisham.

“The DG has given his best effort. The ministers are the ones who opened up this sector and that. It’s better for the ministers to resign, focus on gardening in their own constituencies,” he said.

@SyazlinAiza pointedly asked Adlin to direct his tweet to his own boss instead.

@ritajeswnt also came to Dr Noor Hisham’s defence.
