KUALA LUMPUR – Youth coalition Sekretariat Solidariti Rakyat (SSR) has called on all Malaysians to come out and protest against the Perikatan Nasional administration on July 31.
Titled “Keluar dan #Lawan” (come out and fight), the youth-based group said the rally will be a symbolic opposition towards “a government that is not qualified to lead the country”.
In a statement, SSR said the date, time, and venue of the rally will be announced at a later date.
“We don’t need leaders that disparage the suffering of the people,” said SSR, adding that the authorities often make decisions that do not benefit Malaysians.
Calling on Malaysians to remind those in power of the sovereignty of the people, the group added that it is not keen to be enemies with the exception of “power-crazy” leaders that continue to be ignorant of the people’s suffering.
The group also reiterated three demands: Prime Minister Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin’s resignation; an automatic loan moratorium, and for the upcoming special Parliament sitting to be more than a “briefing session” for the government.
These demands were also issued in an SSR-led protest last week.
On July 17, 14 black flags were raised under the shadow of the Jalur Gemilang by a small group of protesters at Dataran Merdeka.
Under the watchful eye of over 50 police officers, the protesters also laid five shrouded figures resembling on the grounds, to represent those who have lost their lives to Covid-19 as well as those who were pushed to committing suicide due to the pressures of the pandemic.
The following day, three members of the youth coalition were hauled up by police and fined RM2,000 each for allegedly violating Regulation 10 of the Prevention and Control of Infectious Diseases (Measures Within Infected Local Areas) Regulations 2021, which prohibits gatherings.
The three SSR members – Mohammad Alshatri Abdullah, Mohd Asraf Sharafi Mohd Azhar, and Muhammad Nur Taufiq Azhar – have decided to settle their compounds and are currently raising funds.
The trio had earlier told the press that they were only echoing the sentiments of the people based on constitutional principles and freedom of speech.
