KOTA KINABALU – Three civil servants attached to a federal agency have been arrested on suspicion of using government-owned vehicles to get through police roadblocks while trafficking migrants.
The ruse by the suspects, all men aged between 39 and 49, was finally found out on July 14.
They would speed up their four-wheel drives, which bear their department’s logo, upon approaching roadblocks.
The suspects were able to get past three roadblocks this way before being detained in Jalan Apas Balung in Tawau, said a source.
The trio were brought to the Sri Indah police station for questioning.
“They had 15 passengers in the vehicles, and were heading to Tawau from Lahad Datu,” said the source.
“When they were arrested, police saw only the three of them initially.”
Sabah police commissioner Datuk Hazani Ghazali said the case is being investigated under the Anti-Trafficking in Persons and Anti-Smuggling of Migrants Act 2007, and Crime Prevention Act 1959. – The Vibes, July 21, 2021
