KUALA LUMPUR – Barely a day after going live, a petition calling for Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin to resign as prime minister has garnered 25,000 signatures, as pressure continues to mount on the embattled leader.
The petition, which was started by one Ariffaizal Mohd Nor Ariffin, comes in the midst of a brewing constitutional crisis, following the revocation of all emergency ordinances by the government without the consent of the Yang di-Pertuan Agong.
Ariffaizal, in the summary of the appeal, listed 10 reasons why Muhyiddin is deemed to be no longer capable of leading Malaysia, and called for the appointment of a new prime minister to guide the country back on the right track.
At the top of the list of “failures”, he said the prime minister has failed to respect the decree of the king for the emergency proclamation and its ordinances, as well as the National Recovery Plan, to be laid before and debated in Parliament.
Muhyiddin has also failed to coordinate his ministers in their actions to ensure there is no overlapping decision, he added.
The petition also noted that the prime minister has been proven to spread fake news, after claiming that fully vaccinated folk will be allowed to make interstate movements – a policy which has yet to be announced.
The other alleged failures elaborated in the petition point to the fact that Muhyiddin has:
- Failed to prove his legitimacy in Parliament;
- Failed to properly and systematically implement the government’s aid distribution;
- Caused serious damage to the federal constitution by announcing the retroactive revocation of emergency ordinances;
- Tarnished the image of the country at the global level by being a laughing stock;
- Wasted public funds by appointing ministers with no record of service contribution;
- Made multiple domestic loans amounting to RM130 billion with no concrete excuse; and,
- Been deemed incapable of ensuring the economy is performing well.
Muhyiddin and his Perikatan Nasional government have come under heavy fire after being issued a royal rebuke on Thursday for their decision to revoke the emergency ordinances without first getting the consent of the king.
The ongoing petition, which is now one of the top ones on Change.org, aims to collect a million signatures. – The Vibes, July 31, 2021
