KUALA LUMPUR – The postponement of Umno’s elections is invalid due to the term expiry of Supreme Council officer-bearers for 2018-21, said the Registrar of Societies.

In a statement carried by The Star, RoS director-general Jasri Kasim was quoted as saying the decision was made based on Supreme Council meeting minutes.

“Based on the minutes submitted, the Supreme Council postponed the polls for the Supreme Council, divisions and branches initially scheduled for July 7.

“Umno’s decision is invalid because the term of the Supreme Council officer-bearers for 2018-21 ended on June 30.”

On June 27, then party polls director Datuk Seri Tajuddin Abdul Rahman told Sinar Harian that Datuk Seri Ahmad Zahid Hamidi will remain president until early 2023 in view of the 18-month election postponement.

He was quoted as saying a majority of Supreme Council members agreed to the delay the previous week, where a “circular resolution” was carried out online.

“Only two did not sign the resolution.”

He said the party constitution allows for a maximum postponement of 18 months, beginning June 30. – The Vibes, August 6, 2021
