KOTA KINABALU – Shell Malaysia is profiting from Sabah oil, and accordingly, should assist in the state’s development, said Datuk Darell Leiking, expressing disappointment with the company’s plan to relocate operations to Miri, Sarawak.

The Penampang MP said Shell gets its oil from Gumusut-Kakap and Malikai, both of which are in Sabah.

“Sabah may currently be the second-largest oil producer in the country, and our state still has unexplored reserves.

“As a matter of principle, foreign investors should have understood that any activity to utilise our state’s natural resources for profit-based economies should be compensated by developing Sabah via the creation of jobs and economic spillover.”

He added that Miri’s status as Shell’s first refinery in Sarawak is not a good enough reason for the firm to downsize its operations in Sabah and relocate.

Sabah Deputy Chief Minister Datuk Seri Bung Moktar Radin, too, has issued a call for Shell to rethink its plans to move. – The Vibes, October 24, 2020
