KUALA LUMPUR – Prime Minister Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin will have what is purported to be an emergency meeting with several cabinet members and deputy ministers at his office in Putrajaya this evening.
This comes as Muhyiddin and the Perikatan Nasional government are believed to have lost their majority.
The Vibes placed calls to several ministers’ press secretaries requesting for confirmation on the meeting, but all either denied knowledge of it or called it “fake news”.
The Vibes was also told that Communications and Multimedia Minister Datuk Seri Saifuddin Abdullah and his team are currently in Kuantan.
Earlier, Utusan Malaysia reported on the “cabinet meeting” in Putrajaya.
However, another source close to the matter said it is actually an emergency meeting.
“If you ask them if there is a cabinet meeting, of course they will deny it. It’s not a cabinet meeting.”
The insider added that he observed several cars belonging to ministers entering the Perdana Putra complex.
Malaysiakini reported that Muhyiddin will see the Yang di-Pertuan Agong at Istana Negara at noon on Monday, with strong speculation that he will tender his resignation.
However, many of his cabinet members have denied this will happen.
Yesterday, Muhyiddin made a last-ditch attempt to remain in power, urging opposition lawmakers to lend him support in Parliament.
Observers and other politicians said the Bersatu president was essentially offering bribes on national television with his “seven offers”.
The Pakatan Harapan presidential council said Muhyiddin has lost his majority and demanded that he do the honourable thing by stepping down.
His erstwhile ally Datuk Seri Ahmad Zahid Hamidi said the besieged Muhyiddin should not usurp the powers of the Agong in determining the appointment of the next prime minister.
“With this acknowledgement, the Pagoh MP no longer has the legitimacy to carry out his duties as prime minister, as per Article 43(4) of the federal constitution,” said the Umno president.
Zahid said his party will not consider any offer from someone who has no legitimacy, let alone one who is desperate enough to offer bribes to prolong his political career.
“As an MP who has sworn to preserve and uphold the federal constitution, the Pagoh MP should not usurp the powers of the Yang di-Pertuan Agong to decide on the appointment of a prime minister.
“Umno advises that the people remain calm until His Majesty performs his duties and responsibilities according to the federal constitution under Article 40(2) to appoint a new prime minister from among Dewan Rakyat members.” – The Vibes, August 14, 2021
