KUALA LUMPUR – The Perlis Fatwa Committee has introduced a new ruling prohibiting inappropriate jokes that mock Islam and toy with the religion in terms of belief, syiar or practice.

The decision was made during the 53rd meeting of the committee.

In an official statement today, the committee said jokes are generally allowed in Islam but are subject to the original law, which states they are permissible unless they go against shariah (Islamic law).

“The forms of jokes nowadays are pranks, caricatures, parodies, satire, comedy and the like.

“If it is intended to bring good and it is done in a good way, such as to foster a more effective educational relationship or has good intentions, it can bring pahala (rewards),” the committee said.

However, the committee made it clear that jokes that disparage or demean others unfairly and those that could possibly bring harm are prohibited.

In the fatwa, the committee prohibits one from making jokes that could cause harm to others physically and emotionally, as well as inflicting harm to the dignity, property or peace of an individual or the community.

Jokes that may lead to immorality, sin and wickedness and the use of improper language and behaviour according to local customs are also forbidden.

“It is also advised that the community practise moderation, balance and appropriateness in the context of religion, including matters pertaining to jokes.” – The Vibes, September 20, 2021
