BUTTERWORTH – Is it worth risking your life by beating red lights for the sake of chasing “trips”?
Well, for food delivery riders (p-hailing), it is worth the risk.
This has resulted in many accidents involving p-hailing riders, said the Penang Road Transport Department (RTD).
In their recently launched “Ops Merah”, summons were issued for 236 offences involving running red lights, with half of the offenders being p-hailing riders.
State RTD director Adenan Md Isa said that “Ops Merah”, which is held from October 8 to November 7 saw the department issuing a total of 537 summons for various offences so far.
Besides running red lights, other offences included 142 cases for driving without a licence, violating one-way traffic signs (25 cases), not wearing a helmet (27 cases), driving underage (two cases), registration number not in accordance with specifications (79 cases) as well as other offenses (26 cases).
“The operations which began on October 8, was conducted in all the five districts of the state and were aimed to make sure that vehicles used are road-worthy to ensure the safety of road users,” said Adenan.
He also said that the department has concluded another operation named “Ops Pemandu Warga Asing” to ensure that foreigners do not flout road traffic rules and regulations.
A total of 18 Myanmar nationals and two each from Indonesia, Bangladesh and Pakistan were reprimanded for not having valid driving licenses and having expired road tax and insurance. – The Vibes, November 3, 2021
