KOTA KINABALU – Only two weeks after schools reopened for Form 5 students in Sabah, a new Covid-19 cluster involving a secondary school in Ranau was recorded today after a hostel student tested positive with the virus last week.
Sabah’s Covid-19 spokesman Datuk Seri Masidi Manjun in his statement said the outbreak, dubbed the Kemburongoh cluster, which started SMK Kemburongoh, involved a 17-year-old student as the index case.
He had infected 21 other individuals, including his classmates, hostel warden, and the warden’s family members.
The student tested positive on November 9 upon experiencing Covid-19 symptoms since November 6.
Form 5 students had begun attending physical classes since November 1, while Form 1 to Form 4 students will start attending school beginning Monday on rotation.
Sabah recorded 541 new Covid-19 cases today and one Covid-19-related death (in Pitas).
Masidi said the state now has three districts categorised as yellow zones (one to 20 active cases) and two orange-zone districts (21 to 40 active cases), while 33 other districts are still categorised as red zones (over 40 active cases).
He said the vaccination has proven to be effective as an average of 98% of daily Covid-19 patients in Sabah either experience mild symptoms or showed no symptoms, and do not need hospital treatment.
“Today, out of the total 541 positive cases, only one patient is in Category 3, two patients are in Category 4, and three patients in Category 5,” he said.
In the state, 75.31% of the adult population and 69.77% of teenagers are fully vaccinated. – The Vibes, November 18, 2021
