KUALA LUMPUR – The implementation of Undi18 and automatic voter registration will come into effect on December 15 after amendments in the Constitutional (Amendment) Act 2019 have been officially gazetted, said the Election Commission (EC).
In a statement today, EC secretary Datuk Ikmalrudin Ishak said Section 3(a) and (b) of the Constitutional (Amendment) Act 2019 has been gazetted yesterday after receiving assent from the Yang di-Pertuan Agong.
“Amendments to the subsidiary laws related to the election – Elections (Registration of Electors)(Amendment) Regulations 2021 and Elections (Conduct of Election)(Amendment) Regulations 2021 – were gazetted on November 30 as P.U.(A) 433/2021 and P.U.(A) 434/2021 after receiving the assent from the Yang di-Pertuan Agong in accordance with Section 17 of the Election Act 1958.
“EC will table both amendments to the regulations in Parliament soon.”
Yesterday, according to an announcement in the Federal Gazette, the Yang di-Pertuan Agong has decided that December 15 will be the date when certain provisions in the Constitutional (Amendment) Act 2019 come into force.
Currently, under Article 119 of the federal constitution, every citizen who reaches the age of 21 will be qualified to vote in their respective constituencies.
With the amendment, the words “twenty-one years” would be substituted with “eighteen years”.
The amendment will result in a constitutional provision that allows automatic voter registration as well. – The Vibes, December 2, 2021
