KUALA LUMPUR – A 6.7-magnitude earthquake was detected south of Jakarta at approximately 5pm Malaysian time.

According to Indonesia’s Meteorology, Climatology, and Geophysical Agency (@infoBMKG), the quake occurred some 120km off the coast of the Sumur-Banten region.

An aftershock measuring 5.7 on the Richter scale was reported in the same location at 5:50pm at a depth of approximately 10km.

The agency maintained an earlier no-tsunami warning following the aftershock.

It is understood that the quake was also felt in the capital Jakarta, some 200km away from the epicentre.

Videos circulating on social media show occupants of Jakarta skyscrapers evacuated to the ground floor.

The Malaysian Meteorological Department has also reported the quake, saying that there is no threat of a tsunami hitting Malaysia. – The Vibes, January 14, 2022
