KUALA LUMPUR – Embattled Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) chief commissioner Tan Sri Azam Baki has expressed his gratitude following the recent findings from the Securities Commission Malaysia (SC), effectively clearing him of any wrongdoing related to his share-trading.
In a statement released this evening, Azam said that following the SC’s findings, he was told the case against him would subsequently be closed.
As such, he said, he would continue discharging his duties as MACC’s chief commissioner to combat corruption as usual.
“Alhamdulillah, I have to express my gratitude towards the decision made by the SC that found no wrongdoing committed by me.
“I was informed by those in the SC that investigations into the matter have been finalised. The SC has closed the file of that inquiry.”
Azam’s response comes hours after the SC revealed its inquiry into his alleged abuses involving the ownership of company shares and warrants supposedly purchased by his brother had been inconclusive.
Azam, who has maintained his innocence, had said he was only answerable to the Anti-Corruption Advisory Board, and later insisted that only the Yang di-Pertuan Agong can end his tenure.
The chief commissioner has recently been accused by opposition lawmakers of being in contempt of Parliament when they claimed Azam ignored their calls to present himself before the parliamentary select committee on agencies.
However, the PSC proceedings slated for tomorrow were later postponed as announced by Dewan Rakyat Secretary Nizam Mydin Bacha Mydin, which was made due to several issues that required prior legal advice from Parliament’s legal counsel office. – The Vibes, January 18, 2022
