[UPDATED] Penang targets 20% reduction in water consumption per capita

GEORGE TOWN – Penang has set a lavish target to ensure that its people reduce water consumption by 20% per capita in the next nine years.

This is part of the state’s ambitious Vision 2030 plan aimed at making Penang an international-class city.

The target was announced during Chief Minister Chow Kon Yeow’s presentation of Penang’s three-year report card.

He said the government will redouble its efforts to ensure that the people’s needs are met.

Other plans include ensuring that all hotels operating in Penang are green-certified and that the state meets its target in guaranteeing that all applicants of its affordable housing scheme can secure a unit.

Chow also said that this year, the state’s economic outlook remains challenging because of the global uncertainty due to the Covid-19 pandemic and sluggish growth.

But Penang remains resolute in its efforts to accelerate its development plans.

Chow said that the unveiling of a three-year report card demonstrates the state’s commitment towards displaying accountability to the people.

He added that the people’s aspirations will not be compromised despite the unexpected hardships brought on by Covid-19, which had later impaired the state’s economic projection.

“Penang has allotted its entire resources into battling Covid-19 and returning normalcy to the lives of the people as much as possible, especially those impacted by the loss of lives, jobs and accommodations.”

Chow said that to hasten the state’s aspiration in meeting its Vision 2030 development goals, Penang will focus on coming up with more initiatives in workplaces, communities, and industry engagement.
