KUALA LUMPUR – Abnormally intense whirlwinds struck several parts of Ipoh this evening in a freak storm that blew off rooftops and damaged several homes barely two days before Chinese New Year.

Ipoh became a trending topic on Twitter as the incident made rounds on social media, with netizens sharing footage and images of the devastating winds that wreaked havoc ahead of the festivities.

Many of the netizens likened the winds to a “tornado” of sorts, although such weather occurrences are highly uncommon in the country.

According to Berita Harian, the freak storm had hit homes and uprooted trees in Taman Tasek Damai and Kg Tawas.

A spokesperson from the Perak Fire and Rescue Department said the department received a call about the storm at around 6.40pm this evening.

“As soon as our machinery arrived at the location, we found that several trees had fallen and some homes were damaged,” the spokesperson was quoted as saying.

“There are no injuries reported currently but monitoring of the areas is still being carried out.” – The Vibes, January 30, 2022
