KUALA LUMPUR – At an event today, DAP revealed that it was running Segamat-born businessman M. Kanan in the Bekok state constituency for the Johor election.

During a press event in Bekok’s basketball court, Kanan said he comes from a very average family of rubber tappers but managed to change his economic status through education.

“My family was not rich, but my mother prioritised the importance of education for my three siblings and I.

“Because of her ambition for us, I now hold a degree and have a successful business with a company that supplies medical equipment,” he said, adding that he is contesting to show the youth that success is possible, even for those from rural areas.

“Triumph has nothing to do with growing up in a city. There are many political and economic problems in our nation, but what is important for me now is the people of Bekok and their plight,” he said.

He added that he intends to focus on issues such as job opportunities and housing availability once he gains the Bekok seat from incumbent and fellow party member S. Ramakrishnan.

He also promised the youth in Bekok various beneficial programmes should he be elected.

Also present at the event was party deputy chairman Gobind Singh Deo who backed Kanan’s candidacy, saying that the businessman is “trustworthy besides being a tried and tested representative of the people.”

“The state elections we have seen so far, such as in Melaka and now Johor, happened because our government is unstable.

“DAP is putting forth candidates who can help contribute to the building of a more secure government,” he said, adding that Kanan’s experience in business will help in raising the economic status of Bekok residents.

Also present at the event was DAP veteran and Iskandar Puteri MP Lim Kit Siang, who referenced the 1Malaysia Development Bhd trial currently ongoing in Brooklyn, New York, as an example of how Malaysians were “swindled by corrupt politicians”, with global eyes now on the approaching state polls.

“Our citizens are the ones who paid for all those lavish parties thrown using money stolen from us through 1MDB.

“With the trial of the affair taking place now, the world is watching to see whether Johoreans will be able to differentiate who is corrupt and who is not.” – The Vibes, February 19, 2022
