GEORGE TOWN – Several education and high-risk group clusters have contributed significantly towards the high number of Covid-19 cases in Penang.

Among the significant clusters include the Jalan Ibbetson education cluster at the Barat Daya district, which recorded 111 cases; the Jalan Pondok Upeh education cluster (71), Jalan Ara Kuda education cluster in Seberang Prai Utara (104), and the Jalan Tun Hamdan Sheikh Tahir education cluster in the same district (75), while another workplace along the same road recorded 81 cases.

Penang is presently ranked third for infectivity rate nationwide with 74 infections for every 1,000 people. 

Labuan is currently ranked highest, with 96 infections in 1,000 people, followed by Putrajaya with 89 infections in 1,000 people.

Penang also recorded a total of 402 clusters in the state with 40 active clusters, which is about 10% of the total number of clusters.

The Health Ministry’s CovidNow portal stated that Penang has 16,091 active cases as of noon today, with 1,548 cases, today bringing the cumulative total to 240,815 cases.

A total of 14,234 rapid self-tests were conducted daily in Penang, turning up a positive rate of 16.6%.

The data also reported that those in the age group between 18 and 29 contributed to 30.2% of the infected cases, aged between 30 and 39 (22%), aged between 40 and 49 (14.4%), aged between 50 and 59 (9.8%) and those between 60 and 69 (6%). – The Vibes, March 14, 2022
