ANOTHER tree came crashing down today despite efforts by the Penang Island City Council (MBPP) to trim the ageing ones which dot many parts of George Town here.
In the incident about 9 am, two grandparents and their nine-year old grandchild cheated death when the giant tree fell on their vehicle while on their way to the Tropicana 218 Macalister condominiums along Macalister Road.
Penang Fire and Rescue Department assistant operations director John Sagun Francis, who confirmed the incident, said it occurred when traffic was light.
"The public freed the three victims from the car before firefighters arrived," he said.
Francis said the victims were given initial treatment before being rushed to Penang Hospital.
The victims were a 66-year-old man who suffered chest injuries, his 68-year-old wife who sustained injuries to her nose and left hand, and their granddaughter who suffered a hand injury.
"The operation was carried out with assistance from the MBPP and Civil Defence Force, while police and Health Ministry personnel also assisted at the scene," said Francis.
MBPP was busy trimming trees since a spate of fallen trees occurred in the past years, including one which killed two tourists from China two years ago. - August 9, 2026.
