THERE will be no special treatment or preferential handling for any individual, including elected representatives found involved in cases of domestic violence, as they are subject to the same laws.

Penang State Executive Councillor for Social Development, Welfare, and Non-Islamic Religious Affairs, Lim Siew Khim, stated that the state government maintains a firm stance against all forms of domestic violence, while upholding the investigative process, the principles of justice, and the rule of law.

"Our position is clear: we will not compromise on domestic violence, and no one is above the law.

"At the same time, we must respect the legal process and allow the authorities the space to conduct a fair investigation, free from any prejudice. Let the legal process determine the subsequent course of action based on the facts and evidence obtained," she said in a statement last night.

Yesterday, Penang Police Chief Datuk Dennis Lim Kwang Keng confirmed that police had received a report regarding a case in which a State Legislative Assemblyman (ADUN) in the state allegedly assaulted his wife.

To date, the police have recorded statements from four individuals, including the assemblyman in question and his wife, to assist in an investigation under Section 323 of the Penal Code for voluntarily causing hurt.

Lim said it would be inappropriate to draw any conclusions or pass judgment on any party before the facts have been established.

She advised the public to refrain from circulating unverified information or engaging in speculation concerning the case.

She noted that the state government continues to strengthen efforts to prevent domestic violence through collaborations with the Women's Centre for Change (WCC), the Penang Women's Development Corporation (PWDC), and other relevant agencies.

Such initiatives include the 'Safe Family Policy' (Dasar Keluarga Selamat), introduced in 2020, and the 'First Support Point' (FSP) network, which provides initial assistance and connects victims with relevant agencies.

"As of October 31, a total of 646 individuals from the community and relevant organisations across the state have received training through this network," she said. – November 4, 2026
