THE Kuala Lumpur High Court has vacated all previously scheduled trial dates for former prime minister Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin’s sedition case after his defence sought a fresh review of the charge by the Attorney-General’s Chambers (AGC).

Judge Datuk Aslam Zainuddin fixed Dec 3 for an update on the proposed representation after the defence informed the court it had received a letter from the palace.

Muhyiddin’s lawyer, Datuk Amer Hamzah Arshad, said the letter was received yesterday, following his client’s audience with the Sultan of Pahang, Al-Sultan Abdullah Ri’ayatuddin Al-Mustafa Billah Shah, on Oct 26.

He declined to disclose its contents but said the defence intended to submit a fresh representation to the AGC, together with a copy of the letter, for consideration.

Amer Hamzah asked the court for time for the prosecution to consider the matter, saying the defence did not wish to undermine the positive understanding reached by proceeding with the trial before the representation was considered.

Deputy public prosecutor Azlina Rasdi did not object to the request.

Muhyiddin, 79, who is also Bersatu president, was charged on Aug 27, 2024, with uttering seditious words during the Nenggiri state by-election campaign in Gua Musang, Kelantan, on Aug 14 that year.

The charge relates to remarks about his claim that he was not invited by the Yang di-Pertuan Agong at the time to take the oath as prime minister after the 15th General Election, despite allegedly having the support of 115 of the 222 Members of Parliament.

He was charged under Section 4(1)(b) of the Sedition Act 1948, which carries a maximum fine of RM5,000, imprisonment of up to three years, or both, upon conviction.

The case was initially heard at the Gua Musang Sessions Court before being transferred to the Kuala Lumpur High Court for trial following an application by the defence. - November 3, 2026
