THE battle for votes in the Melaka state election will hinge not only on party machinery but also on the ability of political coalitions to retain their traditional support bases and win over undecided voters.

A party insider said Barisan Nasional (BN), Pakatan Harapan (PH) and Perikatan Nasional (PN) faced different challenges in their bid to secure support, with the strength of their respective election machinery only one part of the equation.

“BN has the advantage of incumbency, an established grassroots network and experience in governing the state.”

“However, its record in office will still be judged by voters looking for tangible improvements in their daily lives.”

“PH, meanwhile, faces the task of retaining support, particularly among urban and non-Malay voters, while PN needs to consolidate the strengths of its component parties,” he explained.

The insider said the appeal of individual candidates could also influence the outcome, particularly in closely contested constituencies.

Popularity, service records and relationships with local communities would remain important considerations, as voters were not necessarily choosing a party based on its national standing alone.

The campaign is expected to bring local concerns to the forefront, with the rising cost of living, employment opportunities, housing, economic development and the quality of state government services likely to feature prominently.

National issues, including political stability, integrity, corruption and the performance of the Madani government, are also expected to become part of the campaign debate.

The insider further said that voters would ultimately want to see results rather than political promises, with the confidence and supply agreements (CSAs) signed ahead of the polls potentially coming under scrutiny.

“The division of Malay votes among BN, PAS and Bersatu could also influence the contests, particularly in constituencies where several parties are competing for the same pool of support.”

“The ability of political allies to transfer votes between parties should not be taken for granted, as cooperation at the leadership level does not necessarily translate into support among grassroots voters,” he added.

Meanwhile, voter turnout will be another factor to watch, especially in marginal constituencies where differences in participation could affect the final results.

The presence of parties contesting in 16 constituencies adds another dimension to the election, with multi-cornered fights potentially splitting votes and altering the dynamics in individual seats.

With BN defending its position as the incumbent administration, PH seeking to retain its electoral base, and PN working to consolidate its support, the Melaka polls will test not just the reach of each coalition’s machinery but also its ability to convince voters at the constituency level. - November 2, 2026
