THE United States has struck Iran’s Qeshm Island in the Strait of Hormuz, the Wall Street Journal reported, citing US officials, amid uncertainty over whether President Donald Trump would resume military action against Tehran.
The report on Nov 2 followed Iranian state news agency IRNA’s account of several explosions on the island, although the US Central Command did not immediately respond to a request for comment.
The newspaper said the attack was part of a series of limited US strikes carried out in recent weeks.
The operations were conducted on a smaller scale and kept secret to avoid signalling that Washington intended to resume its major military campaign against Iran, it added.
Earlier on Nov 2, Trump cast doubt on whether he would follow through on his threat to renew military strikes, saying a deal with Tehran remained possible.
Asked by reporters whether he was considering attacking Iran after the Nov 3 midterm elections, Trump replied: “No”.
