KOTA KINABALU – The underground storage unit of Queen Elizabeth Hospital II (QEH II) was flooded after a water pipe burst, forcing the hospital administration to postpone all elective surgery procedures, Sabah Health Department director Datuk Dr Rose Nani Mudin said today.

This is the latest major infrastructure breakdown affecting key hospitals in the capital city within two days, after the state Health Department shut down the operating theatres at Queen Elizabeth Hospital I (QEH I) to make way for remedial work to restore power to the hospital.

Rose Nani said a water pipe connected to the hospital’s main storage tank had burst at 10.58am today, flooding the dietetic storage unit and the linen space run by concessionaire Sedafiat Sdn Bhd.

“Immediate action has been taken by QEH II and the concessionaire to install a bypass pipe line to bring the flowing water under control,” Rose Nani said in a statement.

“The water in the underground storage unit has been cleaned and repair work has been done and is expected to be completed by 8pm tonight.”

Rose Nani said all elective surgeries scheduled for the day were postponed as a precaution and will resume after the repair work is completed.

“Other treatment services at QEH II have resumed as normal,” she said.
