GEORGE TOWN – Penang police have denied issuing orders to two police outriders to escort a driver believed to be the son of Baling MP Datuk Seri Abdul Azeez Abdul Rahim.
State police chief Datuk Mohd Shuhaily Mohd Zain said the instruction was also not given by any senior officer in Bukit Aman.
“I would like to clarify that no senior officer gave instructions to the traffic policemen for the task to be carried out.
"I hope it is clear so that it is no longer polemised by the community," he said at a press conference at the Penang police headquarters today.
Shuhaily said the two traffic policemen had been transferred to the administrative division until the investigation and disciplinary action were completed.
He said, in any escorting assignment, there is a clear procedure that has been prepared by Bukit Aman.
“Instructions for escort assignments have already been issued by Bukit Aman in March. Unfortunately, it is still happening.”
He said the police had also contacted the driver to assist in the investigation.
“The case is being investigated under Section 233 of the Communications and Multimedia Act 1998 because it involves the abuse of social media. We want to see if there are elements to tarnish the image of the police.”
Last Saturday, The Vibes reported that Penang police will investigate a video of outriders escorting the son of Baling MP Datuk Seri Abdul Azeez Abdul Rahim through the streets of Penang.
The video was posted by an Instagram account with the handle @anwarazeez, showing Azeez’s son Mohamed Khairul Anwar driving in Penang with two police outriders.
In one of the videos, which was posted as an Instagram story and has since expired, an outrider appeared to stop an oncoming car looking to make a turn, allowing Khairul’s vehicle to run the red light.
