KUALA LUMPUR – Former youth activist Adam Adli Abdul Halim has won the race for the PKR Youth chief post, according to an unofficial tally of the party polls.
While results from Sarawak are trickling in, Adam has gained a comfortable lead over Penang PKR Youth chief incumbent Fahmi Zainol with a total of 13,508 votes against the latter's 12,017.
With only seven divisions in Sarawak yet to be tabulated and nearly 1,500 votes in his favour, the results clearly indicate that Adam has taken the post.
Adam, when contacted, said he was confident of the victory, although the results have yet to be made official.
“I am glad and grateful to have been chosen, and this has been a great relief to me,” he told The Vibes.
“I am also looking forward to working with the party members and the first priority is to unify the AMK (Youth wing) to make it stronger for the next general elections.”
Adam said his victory was also a sign that the party was open to efforts to rejuvenate itself.
He added that this has always been the “outlook” for PKR, which welcomes fresh faces and serves as a platform to groom future leaders.
“I want to ensure all states have prepared to face the election as it is a long process,” he explained when commenting on his priorities as Youth chief.
“There are a lot of steps to be taken, such as audit checks and so on. Throughout my campaign, there were many divisions that had vacancies, so we want to complete the line-up at all levels.”
On the low turnout for the polls, Adam said this was likely due to Covid-19 fears, but insisted it needed to proceed in order to reactivate the party.
“There was certainly a vacuum due to Covid-19, but this is a good chance for the party to reactivate itself ahead of the elections.” – The Vibes, May 30, 2022
