MELAKA – The remand order against a motorist suspected to be drunk and who allegedly caused the death of a couple, both of whom were disabled, in a crash in Jalan Serkam Pantai in Merlimau, Jasin, on June 5, has been extended for another three days.

Jasin district police chief Mispani Hamdan said an extension remand order against the 24-year-old suspect was issued by the Melaka magistrates’ court’s assistant registrar Ahmad Shakib Ismail.

“The remand period has been extended from tomorrow to June 13 to enable further investigations to be carried out in accordance with Section 44(1) of the Road Transport Act (APJ) 1987 after the four-day remand period against the suspect ended today.

“We are also still waiting for the results of the chemical report, which is expected to be obtained next week,” he said when contacted.

In the 7.45am incident on June 5, three motorcycles and a car driven by a 24-year-old man were involved in the collision.

The suspect, who is believed to be driving while intoxicated, crashed into a motorcycle ridden by Ezuddin Mohammad, 50, and Surayah Muhamat, 48.

Both victims died at the scene due to severe injuries to their heads and bodies.

Another motorcyclist, Ya’akob Mohamad, 57, also sustained minor injuries. – Bernama, June 10, 2022
