ALOR STAR – Kulim Smart Parking (KSP), the first smart parking system in Kedah, will start operating in stages from September before it is fully enforced from next January.

Menteri Besar Datuk Seri Muhammad Sanusi Md Nor said the initiative was a collaboration between the Kulim Municipal Council (MPKK) and HeiTech Padu Bhd in operating 7,000 smart car parks under the jurisdiction of MPKK.

“KSP is the first initiative implemented in Kedah using a smartphone app. After this, users do not have to buy and scratch parking coupons when they park their vehicles in permitted areas.

“The use of KSP will make it easier for motorists and increase the quality of MPKK’s governance and services to the local community,” he told reporters after the KSP launch at Wisma Darul Aman here today.

Sanusi said the state government also hoped that the local authorities in other districts could implement the same initiative in an effort to optimise revenue collections.

“With the KSP app, we hope the initiative will be implemented state-wide,” he added.

Meanwhile, MPKK president Nadzman Mustaffa expects parking revenue collection in the district to increase by RM1 million a year with the implementation of KSP.

“The collection in Kulim is currently  RM1 million a year through the coupon method. With KSP, the income is expected to increase by another RM1 million due to savings, among others, from coupon printing and enforcement costs.

“The coupon method of parking payment is still valid until December. KSP will benefit consumers in terms of saving time and easy payment methods that can be made through the KSP app online,” he said.

Meanwhile, HeiTech Padu executive vice-president Abdul Halim Md Lassim said the initiative was in line with Kulim’s identity as a high-tech city, adding that it would be a catalyst for digital transformation in the district.

“The operation of 7,000 smart car parks in Bandar Kulim for seven years will be planned and managed as best as possible to ensure good governance and service delivery for the people of Kulim,” he said. – Bernama, July 13, 2022
