KUALA LUMPUR – Legal group Lawyers for Liberty (LFL) will be aiding the duo accused of insulting Islam – Siti Nuramira Abdullah and partner Alexander Navin Vijayachandran – to raise RM40,000 to make bail.

The couples’ lawyer R. Sivaraj said LFL’s bank account will be used for their crowdfunding purposes after the defence team reached out to the group’s co-founder Latheefa Koya for help.

“We (lawyers) are not discussing the merits of the case, but we want bail posted for both of them so they do not languish in custody while their court cases are ongoing.”

He said the purpose of bail is not to punish accused individuals but to ensure their attendance at subsequent court hearings.

Noting that the original plan was to set up a GoFundMe campaign, he said the decision to opt for the current platform is due to how posting bail is a “time is of essence” situation.

Those interested in helping the couple can channel their donations to the LFL Sdn Bhd’s CIMB bank account (8003397725).

Earlier today, the lawyer told The Vibes that the couple will be appealing to the public for financial aid to settle the bail amount after failing to cough the required funds up on Wednesday.

He said many people have expressed an interest to donate to the duo who have managed to gather about RM3,000 so far.

On Wednesday, Siti Nuramira, 26, had pleaded not guilty to charges of inciting religious disharmony during her open mic skit at the Crackhouse Comedy Club here, with judge Siti Amirah Ghazali setting bail at RM20,000 with one surety and August 18 for mention.

In a video which went viral on social media, she claimed to be a Muslim and to have memorised 15 chapters (juzuk) of the Quran, before stripping off her headscarf and baju kurung to reveal a sleeveless top and mini skirt.

Alexander Navin Vijayachandran, 38, also maintained his innocence to two charges under Section 233(1)(a) of the CMA 1998 for uploading insensitive materials to online platforms and is facing a RM20,000 bail in total. – The Vibes, July 15, 2022
