Customs seizes RM1.89 mil worth of meth, 9,000 cartons of beers in Sabah

KOTA KINABALU – The Customs Department has confiscated 52.464kg of methamphetamine, with a total value worth of some RM1.89 million, at a house in Kota Kinabalu.

Customs Department director-general Datuk Zazuli Johan said in a statement that a 37-year-old man was detained during the raid.

The drugs were believed to be planned for smuggling out of Sabah.

“Acting based on the information obtained from our Field Operation Combat Troops (Cobra), the customs enforcement team and customs airport officers conducted the raid at a house in Kota Kinabalu around 12.12pm on July 28.

“The raid also led to the arrest of the local suspect. The drugs were found hidden within tea plastic bags filled inside items like kitchen electrical items placed in boxes.

“The items are believed for use in Sabah and out of the state,” he said here today.

The case is now being investigated under Section 39B under the Dangerous Drugs Act 1952, he said.

In a separate case, the Customs Department foiled an attempt to smuggle in 9,000 cartons of beer worth nearly RM1.6 million plus RM1.37 million in taxes at Sepanggar Port here.

“On July 29, at around 10.50am, Sabah Customs managed to stop an attempt to smuggle the beer into Sabah after the containers went through our scanning machines.

“No arrests have been made at this point. The modus operandi was to declare the items as some other items in the attempt to bring the beer into Sabah,” he said.

The case is now being investigated under Section 135 of the Customs Act 1967

Towards this end, Zazuli appealed to the public to provide the department with information for any smuggling activities via its toll-free line 1-800-88-8855 or contact the nearest Customs office. – The Vibes, August 3, 2022
