KUALA LUMPUR – Police have opened investigation papers into a defamatory statement by a blogger against former federal Commercial Crimes Investigations Department director Datuk Amar Singh Ishar Singh concerning a raid on Datuk Seri Najib Razak’s home in 2018.
Dang Wangi police chief Noor Dellhan Yahaya confirmed that a report was lodged at the Dang Wangi district police headquarters at 3.02pm today.
“The Criminal Investigations Unit of the Dang Wangi district police headquarters has opened an investigation paper under Section 500 of the Penal Code and Section 233 of the Communications and Multimedia Act 1998.
“Police are carrying out the probe now and the investigation papers will then be submitted to the deputy public prosecutor for further action,” Noor Delhan said in a statement reported by The Vibes’ Bahasa Malaysia sister publication, Getaran.
Amar earlier today denied allegations by blogger Raja Petra Raja Kamaruddin and lodged a police report over the latter’s claims in his Malaysia Today portal that the former top police official had brought along his “girlfriend” during a raid on Najib’s home at Pavillion Residence in May of 2018.
Raja Petra had claimed that Amar’s friend had taken a bag and valuables seized in the raid.
Amar had said the claims were false and totally unfounded, as the raid was a massive operation that seized hundreds of luxury handbags, cash in multiple currencies, gold, jewellery and designer watches linked to the 1Malaysia Development Bhd (1MDB) scandal.
Amar had said as the “biggest raid in the history of PDRM (Royal Malaysian Police)”, it was done in full compliance with strict rules and detailed records made.
“No such lady was present nor was anything removed as alleged,” Amar had said.
The raid was part of investigations initiated by the Pakatan Harapan government at the time, which saw Najib convicted in July 2020 of corruption involving a former 1MDB subsidiary, SRC International Sdn Bhd, and sentenced to 12 years in jail and fined RM210 million.
The former prime minister will be making his final appeal against his conviction and sentence at the Federal Court next week. – The Vibes, August 12, 2022
