JERTIH – More than 60 houses and shops in Jertih and Hulu Besut near here were damaged when a thunderstorm struck about 5pm yesterday.

Most of the buildings had their roof ripped apart or blown away.

A shop owner, Wan Yuslina Wan Yusof, 48, said she was preparing to close her shop for the day when she heard a sound and then realised the roof of her shop was being ripped off.

“I was alone in the kitchen section of the shop and quickly rushed out, only to see a shop besides mine also suffering a similar fate,” said the trader who is renting the business premises from the Besut District Council here.

Meanwhile, Hulu Besut assemblyman Mat Daik Mohamad said more than 50 houses in several villages in the Hulu Besut area were damaged in the storm.

“The two villages suffering from the most damage were Kg Darau and Lepan Kejor. The roofs of most of the affected houses were damaged, but no one was injured in the incident,” he said.

He said yesterday’s incident was the second and the worst this year.

In July this year, more than 20 houses were damaged in a thunderstorm in Hulu Besut. – Bernama, September 20, 2022
