KUALA LUMPUR – DAP’s outgoing Klang MP Charles Santiago has penned a heartfelt and magnanimous note to his constituents and followers, following the party’s decision to drop him from the coming 15th general election (GE15).

In the brief statement, Santiago wished his replacement candidate Ganabatirau Veeraman well, adding that he hoped voters would cast their ballots for a Pakatan Harapan government.

“I am sure my successor shares the same dream for this country of ours. And just like I did, he too needs your support. I know many of you are upset that I am not fielded again but I know we are better than the anger,” Santiago said.

“We are at a crucial time, where each of our votes counts. And therefore, I humbly request that you cast your vote for a Pakatan Harapan government.”

Incumbent Kota Kemuning assemblyman Ganabatirau’s candidacy in Klang ends weeks of questioning over whether DAP would drop the seat’s incumbent MP Charles Santiago, who has held it for three terms.

Since winning the seat in 2008 and breaking MCA’s grip on the Chinese-majority area, Santiago had continued to retain the constituency with increased majorities in subsequent elections.

In 2018, Santiago won the seat with a 78,773-vote majority over MCA candidate Datuk Ching Eu Boon.

In recent weeks, various local community groups have expressed support for Santiago, especially those that represent the Malay and Chinese communities.

In the farewell note, Santiago said it has been an “incredible” 15 years, in which he had enjoyed the people’s trust and friendship.

“My biggest commitment to you, the people of Klang, was to represent you in Parliament; to be your voice. I apologise if I have fallen short but I want you to know I have tried,” he said.

“Deep gratitude to all of you who have been a part of my political journey.”

“We – you and me, share a common goal: to see a fair government in place. A government that rules with compassion, integrity, accountability, and inclusion. A government that is committed to getting rid of corruption.”

Santiago also pledged to keep pushing his message to vote out Umno, and all corrupted politicians, as Malaysians deserve better. – The Vibes, October 26, 2022
