KUALA LUMPUR – A video showing a shouting match purportedly between Umno grassroots members over the selection of a parliamentary candidate has made the rounds on social media, two days ahead of nomination day this Saturday.
A source told Sinar Harian that the incident took place on Tuesday and involved members of a division who were disgruntled over the selection of the candidate for the constituency.
In the one-and-a-half minute video, the party members are seen in a hall somewhere in Kuala Lumpur where an announcement of the candidate took place.
As the shouting match went on, the party members were seen nearing the point of a full-blown scuffle.
However, some of those present at the event had restrained the individuals who were seen acting aggressively in the video.
Political cartoonist Zulkiflee SM Anwar Haque, who is more commonly known as Zunar, was among those who shared the video on Twitter.
In the text of the footage, Zunar suggested the incident was related to Umno’s fielding of its youth chief Datuk Asyraf Wajdi Dusuki in Gerik.

However, The Vibes could not independently verify the authenticity of Zunar’s claim.
But in recent days, Asyraf has made headlines after grassroots members from the Gerik division openly rejected his nomination, calling him an “outsider” and a “parachute” candidate.
Asyraf was also the subject of another video where a man claiming to be a deputy division chief said that the members were not informed beforehand of the youth chief’s candidacy there, adding that other names were suggested. – The Vibes, November 3, 2022
